I'm taking my 929 on a Saddle Sore 1000 Saturday. Wish me luck! _________________ '01 929RR

On the stock seat?!? Yikes, you will definitely qualify for official Titanium Butt status after that! (And probably the Plutonium Prostate award as well for enduring that nuclear burning sensation.) |

Well last year I rode 915 miles on the stock setup. This year ought to be MUCH better since I have heavier bar ends hehehe... Of course the weather last year was quite cold, I think I was just short of shivering for 12 hours straight. I won't have that problem this year.
I'm going to try to roll through 5 western states, which will be cool... CA, NV, OR, ID and WA. _________________ '01 929RR

Yer nutz. I knocked out a SaddleSore 2000 last year on a box-stock Yamaha R1. 2,112 miles in 36 hours! Glad I did it once, but I'll never, ever do that again. Thank god for Red Bull, MP3 players and electric vests.
My advice? Concentrate your route in Nevada and Utah--a couple good stretches at 140 mph will make your days a lot shorter! |

Woah, apfrank, you're a better man than I.
I will see how this goes, then decide if I want to go for more some time later. I kinda like the thought of doing this type of ride on an open classer rather than using a bike that is more suited to this kind of duty.
Really high speeds kills the fuel mileage. What I found on my 915 day is if I kept the speeds below about 95, preferably below 80, my mileage was acceptable, and I could get 160 or more miles between stops. There are a few stretches of 395 in OR that make 95 seem pretty darned slow though. _________________ '01 929RR

1084 miles in 19 hours covering California, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho and Washington. Average speed was 57 mph mileage was 45 mpg. It was a great experience.
Now I can proudly consider myself an iron butt rider, although I think I might have some low grade iron in my butt. It sure hurts!
I washed the bike today. The thickness of bug guts is nothing short of amazing. I butterfly fell out of my boot when I took it off!
It was a new experience for me to cruise at 90-100 mph for hours.
Pics to follow. _________________ '01 929RR

Congrats--did you do all the paperwork to apply for IBA membership? It's cool seeing those IBA plate frames on sportbikes.

I've got the paperwork here at work. I'll get it all photocopied today and get it sent in. I guess the validation process is taking a month or two currently, so I'll have to be paitent.
I don't actually have room for the license plate the way I have my plate configured, but I do have room for a nice sticker on the tail section. I'm looking forward to sporting that. _________________ '01 929RR

Good job Joe.
How's your butt now? Healed, I hope. _________________ Rick

Yeah, the butt's healed, but now my bike has problems. I blew out one of the spark plugs and it took the threads out of the head with it. While I was inspecting all the parts, I found that the exhaust cam had worn through the hard coating on some of the lobes.
My warranty company bought me two new cams and sprockets, cam chain top guide, took care of the heli-coil and bought all my gaskets and bolts. I'm doing all the labor myself, except for the actual grinding of the valve seats and valves.
Currently the valve job is moving along. The valve seats are cut and the head is assembled. However I need to pull it back apart and grind the tops off of most of the valves since there's mostly <.0015 clearance.
I polished up my exhaust ports, ordered a set of block-off plates and am planing on removing... or not re-installing the smog equipment.
I got my certificate, license plate frame and all that stuff from the Iron Butt Association. I can't wait to get back on the bike. _________________ '01 929RR

Wow. blown out spark plug, worn cams? ? ?
How many miles? What would you think the cause of all that is? _________________ Rick

Well I think the blown out spark plug is the result of 1) not using anti-sieze on the spark plug and 2) not installing it tight enough. As for the worn cams, that's a manufacturing defect. Those have a surface hardening on them, and it was obviously not done correctly. On my exhaust cam one lobe was in spec and the one right next to it was .030" under with obvious wear that you can see with the naked eye.
The bike is almost at 42k miles now.
I just got it together last night and rode it in to work this morning. Aside from figuring out a couple of hoses to plug or vent (I removed the smog equipment) it seems to run just fine. _________________ '01 929RR
